Why Bears GM Ryan Pauls was ‘blown away’ by Braxton Jones

When Ryan Pauls picked Braxton Jones in the fifth round of this year’s NFL Draft, the idea was that he could one day be in contention for the starting tackle job. After all, that day was midway through the OTA when Jones lined up a 1 at left tackle. Jones locked his first job, surprising not only the Bears but Jones himself.

“I was blown away by how fast he was growing,” Pauls said. “A lot of credit goes to our coaches and Chris Morgan. “Is called. TRAINING He has to go camping, he has to put on a napkin. I put the pads on and it still works pretty well. Let’s see when the lights come on and we go into preseason. Is he going to do it? The longer he does this, the more these spikes will appear, but has he left? ”

Jones is far from a finished product, but has improved a lot since early summer. Jones wiped out the pre-snap penalties that plagued him in the OTA. He’s been bullied less in pass protection and actually holds his own against Robert Quinn as well. But I am grateful for what I have in front of me.

“I just have to get better every day and keep doing what I do and not let this opportunity go to waste,” Jones said. So I have to keep taking my chances and not really worry about being surprised.”

To this point, Jones has overcome his challenges and succeeded admirably, but his greatest challenge is yet to come.

“He’s going to see a big dog in week one,” the Pole said of 49ers pass rusher Nick Bosa. “I also told him that there will be ups and downs. I think part of being a really good player is short memories. How can you overcome some of those bad plays? It’s going to be the next step for him and just seeing the top rushers in this league is no joke. , can you keep that short memory and have the toughness to stick with it?

“I’m thrilled with him and I’m thrilled with what he’s become. He hasn’t given up his position, he just keeps fighting and keeps fighting. I’m proud of him. “
