Apple could be working on an improved pair of AirPods with a new design.

Iconic wireless earbuds seem ubiquitous, but they could soon be something entirely different.

Apple is reportedly developing a pair of stemless AirPods.

They simply fit into the ear like tiny buds and may stay in the ear with their wingtip design.

Apple blog 9to5Mac quotes respected tech expert and industry analyst Ming-Chi Kuo.

Kuo says the new design will only be available on AirPods Pro models — at least initially.

TF Securities analyst Kuo said, “Apple expects to launch the AirPods Pro 2…with new selling points such as a new form factor design, support for Apple Lossless (ALAC) format, and more. I will.”

“And a charging case that can emit sounds for users to track.

“We are optimistic about demand for the AirPods Pro 2 and expect shipments to reach 18 million to 20 million units in 2022.”

Apple first launched AirPods in 2016. Initially, fans were puzzled by comparing the designed electric toothbrush heads.

But AirPods have now become a cultural icon for teens and adults alike.

Since then, Apple has released several generations of AirPods, including Pro models.

And even though they all serve different functions, every bud still has a stem.

Removing the stem significantly reduces the size of the gadget.

It’s also possible that AirPods Pro owners can now squeeze the stem to perform functions like pause playback, forcing Apple to rethink physical controls.

Apple could move these touch controls to the earbuds themselves.

Of course, Apple has not confirmed such plans.

So when will these sleek new AirPods Pro launch?

Sadly, there is no definitive answer, but the original AirPods Pro are now 3 years old.

Apple is planning to hold a special event on September 7th, where the iPhone 14 will likely be launched.

This could be the perfect time for Apple to upgrade one of its most popular iPhone accessories.

If not, there’s also talk that Apple will host a second event in October for the launch of its new iPad.

This could also be a major slot for the new AirPods Pro announcement.

Unfortunately, we won’t know the truth until Apple chief Tim Cook takes the stage later this year.
