Championship leader Verstappen, who won at home last year, set the fastest lap on the hard tyres, but then slowed dramatically and eventually stopped the car.

The session was red flagged with 45 minutes remaining, the injured car was removed from the track and Verstappen waved to the crowd on his way back to the pits but did not participate further.

Red Bull teammate Sergio Pérez had a challenging session, running wide at Turn 9 and narrowly avoiding the wall before rejoining. He was seventh fastest overall.
