Rangers vs. Red Sox – Game Recap – Sept. 2, 2022

BOSTON — Conner Wong hits his first major league home run, Quique Hernández hits a double, and the Boston Red Sox overcome an early injury to starter Nick Pivetta to beat Texas 9-1 on Friday night. It was the Rangers’ worst six-game losing streak of the season.

Pivetta was sent off with a bruised left calf after being hit by comebacker Leodi Taveras in the third inning. Pivetta threw Taveras at first base to end the inning, but limped off the field.

“Yeah, it was pretty frustrating. I felt pretty good tonight,” said Pivetta, who heads the staff with 27 starts, the only member of the rotation to not miss a start this season.

After the match, however, he wasn’t sure if he would make another start.

“I’m really proud of it,” Pivetta said. “I’m looking forward to continuing this winning streak and continuing on the mound.”

Pivetta was replaced by right-hander Tyler Danish (3-1), who won the game in a scoreless innings.

Texas starter Dallas Keuchel took the loss, going 4 2/3 innings and allowing 7 earned runs to equal his season high. Since joining the Rangers as a free agent on July 26, Keuchel has started two games, giving up a total of 14 earned runs in 10 innings with 18 hits.

Keuchel, the 2015 AL Cy Young Award winner, is 0-2 with Texas this season, going 2-9 combined with a 9.20 ERA over Texas, the Chicago White Sox, and the Arizona Diamondbacks. He entered the game with a major league-best 8.84 ERA.

“I felt like I pitched a lot better than I read the lines,” Keuchel said. “It felt like I was making the pitch and they were fighting, like a classic Red Sox game at Fenway Park. We are working towards the ultimate goal of raising the zero point.”

Wong hit a two-run homer in the seventh inning to score Hernández, who was walked. Wong, a 26-year-old second base catcher, played his sixth game in Boston this year.

“That was a good swing,” said Boston manager Alex Cora. “He’s a pop. I remember him hitting a straight center home run in spring training last year and it kind of blew me away… Now he looks a lot stronger than he did last year. ing.”

“Behind the plate he’s really good. … He commands the whole situation,” he said. “We find ways for him to get plate appearances and keep rolling.”

Texas infielder-outfielder Charlie Culberson pitched a scoreless eighth, allowing a two-out walk and a single.

Hernández scored twice and scored two runs.

Xander Bogaerts hit an RBI double first.

Texas rookie Bubba Thompson led off third and stole second on a single, his 10th swipe since making his major league debut on Aug. 4. Thompson scored on Corey Seager’s single.

Boston scored three times in the fourth on Hernandez’s RBI single and Christian Arroyo’s two-run single.

Rafael Devers and JD Martinez hit RBI doubles in the fifth to finish off Keuchel. Hernández doubled him home with his reliever AJ Alexie run off.
