Bears announce plans for Arlington Heights stadium

The Bears will unveil a concept map of their potential new home at Arlington Heights on September 8.

The conference, which will be held at John Hershey High School in Arlington Heights, will detail what the Bears’ statement calls “one of the largest development projects in the history of Illinois.” The stadium grounds include a “traffic-oriented multi-purpose entertainment district.” Details regarding the design of the stadium will not be covered at this meeting.

The Bears have entrusted the site of the former Arlington Racecourse, where they signed a $197.2 million purchase deal last year. President and CEO Ted Phillips said in January that he expects the land closures to last until the end of this year and could even last until early 2023.

“Our long-term development focus is just that property in Arlington Park,” Phillips said in January.

Arlington Heights Mayor Tom Hayes said neither he nor members of the Arlington Heights village committee will participate in community meetings aimed at addressing concerns and suggestions from suburban residents.

But Hayes said he expects the village to have more substantive discussions about negotiations with the team later this month.

“We hope to get this ball rolling soon,” Hayes said.

The village board is scheduled to meet next Tuesday.

Their current home at Soldier Field is historic, but its shortcomings have diminished its reputation when compared to the state-of-the-art stadiums around the NFL. Soldier Field opened in his 1924 and was designated a National Historic Landmark in 1984, but was lost in a renovation in 2006. Because of the mismatched appearance of a spaceship landing on the iconic pillar.

Nearly every stadium in the league far exceeds the comfort and comfort of Soldier Field, and late-season games on the lake can get bitterly cold. It has been widely assumed that all new stadiums will be indoors.

Another problem was the Bears renting a stadium from the Chicago Park District rather than owning their own building. That arrangement severely limits what a facility can do and reduces revenue.

Soldier Field also has the smallest capacity in the NFL at approximately 62,000. There are 13 stadiums that hold more than 70,000 people, most of them in smaller markets than the Chicago area.

Building a stadium in Arlington Heights would soon line up with the Super Bowl area (the site is currently scheduled for the 2025 game). The league has rewarded every team that makes it to the Super Bowl, even if it’s not part of the regular rotation. The Vikings’ U.S. Bank stadium opened in his 2016 season. , where the Super Bowl was held in 2018.
