ACC commissioner says conference is on good track but football’s good start is ‘important’

After an offseason filled with questions about the future of the Atlantic Coast Conference, commissioner Jim Phillips told ESPN Wednesday that he feels “really, really good about the trajectory” of the league.

The narrative shift around the meeting kicks off Thursday night when Pitt hosts West Virginia in the Backyard Brawl rivalry update. With ESPN College GameDay onsite, games kick off the weekend and the ACC will be featured nationally in his 12 games over his five days. That includes another of his marquee Power 5 non-conference matchups on Sunday night between Florida State and his LSU.

The ACC has traditionally scheduled tough non-conference games over the first three weeks of the season, but since 2018, the ACC has gone 1-10 in week 1 against their power 5 non-conference opponents, leading to a conference win. Moved the story about the whole thing. Not easy to break.

Phillips knows what it means to win these national spotlight games.

“I’m proud of how we’ve looked at the schedule,” Phillips said in a phone interview with ESPN. “Whether fair or unfair, you get to see how they think your season is going to be shaped by the type of team you have, so getting off to a good start is what we’re looking for. is important for

“If you don’t, it doesn’t mean there aren’t a ton of really good teams. But it certainly gets you off to a quick start and puts you in a position to create a story about your program. [if you win], and the successes you may have throughout the year. “

Much has been done about the ACC’s place in the Power 5 hierarchy, especially after the restructuring moves made by the Big Ten and the SEC over the past year. ACC is currently working on ways to strengthen its revenue stream.

“We will look at all the options that can make the meeting even better,” Phillips says repeatedly.

The Big Ten recently signed a seven-year media rights deal worth more than $7 billion, and Big Ten commissioner Kevin Warren said in an interview with HBO’s “Real Sports” that the did not rule out growth.

“We continue to believe that ACC is strong and one of the best all-around conferences in the nation,” Phillips told ESPN. I know there’s a lot of rumors and speculation, we all understand people want answers and certainty…but we’re really aligned right now…one of the revenue gaps A solution to deal with the department. But we can’t sacrifice all these things we do.

“I know there’s been a lot of talk about the dollars coming out of this latest TV deal. Congratulations to the Big Ten. Thank you for all the success we’ve had in the classroom and in competition over the years.” doing.

Multiple ACC sources told ESPN that they feel the debate over uneven revenue sharing is gaining momentum.

“It’s all on the table and discussed,” Phillips confirmed.

Early, high-level performances from big national brands like Florida State (against LSU), Pitt (West Virginia and Tennessee), and Miami (against Texas A&M in Week 3) are important to the league. It will definitely help.

It’s also a return to the discussion of the actual football game. Reach the climax by fighting.

“We’re all trying to have a moment where we can forget all the problems that are on our plate, and we’re coping professionally, personally, and in our world.” It’s a three-and-a-half-hour experience,” says Phillips. “So I know people are looking forward to it. I certainly am.”
